Mar 1, 2008 - St.-Sgt. Eran Dan-Gur, 20, of Jerusalem was one of two soldiers killed in an exchange of fire with Hamas terrorists during an IDF anti-terror operation in northern Gaza.
Eran Dan-Gur, of the IDF Givati Brigade was taking part in an IDF operation near the Jabaliya refugee camp aimed at stopping the escalating rocket attacks on the western Negev from the Gaza Strip. Dan-Gur and Doron Asulin were killed in the exchange of fire; te gunmen reportedly fired mortar shells, antitank and RPG missiles at the soldiers.
Eran lived in the Gilo neighborhood of Jerusalem and was a graduate of the Ort Collegiate high school. His mother, with whom he lived, described her son as a "prodigy" who received grades, not of 100, but of "120". His close friend, Erez Cohen, said: "He was a great guy. In school, he was smart and also popular. He was a good person, a good friend who helped wherever he could."
Although he completed a company commanders' course, Eran refused to take a training post and insisted on returning to combat duty.
St.-Sgt. Eran Dan-Gur was buried in Jerusalem. He is survived by two younger brothers, his mother, Miri, who lives in Jerusalem, and his father, Reuven, of Ramat Gan.
