35. Summary of a meeting between Foreign Minister Peres and Jordan's
Ambassador Muasher, 7 April 1995.
Since the presentation of credentials by Jordan's first ambassador to
Israel, it was becoming a pattern that the foreign minister or senior
members of the foreign ministry regularly briefed the Jordanian ambassador
on the peace process and on progress achieved in bilateral relations. This
was the gist of the first of many meetings held after the appointment
of Mr. Muasher as Jordan's ambassador.
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met on Friday, 7.4.95, with Jordan's first
ambassador to Israel, Dr. Marwan Muasher. Mr. Peres welcomed Muasher's
appointment to the position and expressed his conviction that the peace
between Israel and Jordan would be one of understanding and hope, peace
without complexes."
Ambassador Muasher emphasized the importance of achieving tangible
expressions of the fruits of peace for the two peoples. Mr. Peres and Mr.
Muasher expressed the common hope of getting the Europeans to join the
United States in promoting the region's development and in providing aid
for the Jordanian economy. Mr. Peres expressed his belief that the
Europeans would soon join in funding projects which will ease Jordan's
water problem. At the Jordanian Ambassador's request, Mr. Peres briefed
him on progress in the negotiations with the Syrians and with the
Palestinians. Mr. Muasher expressed hope that there would be progress on
both of these tracks and Mr. Peres stressed that Israel, too, has an
interest in a comprehensive peace in the region. "There is no wound that
we would wish to leave untreated," said Peres. Ambassador Muasher thanked
the Foreign Minister for receiving him, only a few hours after his return
from Europe. Mr. Peres told Dr. Muasher that "your success will be our
success".
