For the first time in its history, Israel has been elected to the executive bureau of a central body of the United Nations. Last Friday, 15 December 2006, Israel, alongside Spain, was elected to represent the Western European and Others Group in the executive bureau of International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
INSTRAW is the leading research body for the empowerment and advancement of women in the world. Israel’s delegate to the executive bureau will be Mazal Renford, Director of the Golda Meir Mount Carmel International Training Center (MCTC), located in Haifa, Israel, the educational and training arm of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Center for International Cooperation (MASHAV).
The executive bureau of INSTRAW is composed of ten Member States, two from each of the five regional groups. Israel will serve on the executive bureau for three years.
Israel hopes to contribute substantially to the work of INSTRAW, and appreciates the opportunity to play a role in global development and the empowerment and advancement of women.
