In The Name Of The Father
(Commentary by Oded Granot, Ma'ariv, Jan 31, 1999, p.A2)
The opening speech by the new crown price on Friday before Arab interior
ministers convening in Amman had his father's full stamp of approval, who
is fighting for his life.
Abdullah spoke of the king, who followed the proceedings from his
sickbed. He emphasized his father's perspective on the war against
terrorism and the need to understand that there is no connection between
Islam and terrorism. Abdullah drew out thunderous applause when he prayed
for his father's quick recovery.
The considerable use of the king's name is not false modesty on the part
of Abdullah, but a crucial component in strengthening his status as
Jordan's new leader. The new crown prince needs time for a breathing
space in order to stabilize the ship and it is important that everyone
knows that the king, who bequeathed him this authority, still accompanies
his first steps and gives him support and instruction even if from
afar.
Abdullah needs his father's support and he also needs inter-Arab
legitimization. Meanwhile, this has been given by an impressive series of
meetings with Arab crown princes who came to Amman.
There is no doubt that he also needs extensive support and help from
Israel which has been Jordan's strong backer for the past 30 years. He
needs this, however, on the quiet, with the fewest public declarations
from us, and without any bear hugs which could hinder him from obtaining
Arab support.
