Aaron Abramovich was born in Jerusalem in 1951. He served in the IDF from 1969-1972 in the Artillery Corps, and completed his service in the reserves with the rank of lieutenant- colonel, commander of an artillery battalion, in 1992.
Abramovich received a degree in law from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1978 and completed his internship in the Ministry of Justice in 1979.
From 1979-1985 he served as an attorney in the office the Jewish Agency legal adviser. The years 1985-1987 he spent in Toronto, Canada, as an emissary of the Jewish Agency. On his return, he served as deputy to the legal adviser of the Jewish Agency until 1995, when he was appointed legal adviser of the Jewish Agency, the World Zionist Organization, the World Jewish Restitution Organization, and Keren Hayesod.
From 1999-2001 Aaron Abramovich served as director-general of the Jewish Agency, and from 2001-2006 as director-general of the Ministry of Justice. In this capacity, he headed the evacuation, compensation, and negotiation committee set up to accommodate the needs of settlers evacuated from their homes in the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria under the Disengagement Plan, preparing the necessary legislation for compensation. In May 2006 he was designated for the position of director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assuming the post on June 4.
Aaron Abramovich has also served as a member of the board of directors of the Israel Museum, the Israel Lands Administration, and El Al. He is married and the father of three.
