The Africa Division is responsible for the framework of relations between the State of Israel and the African States. The Division works to develop and enhance these relations in all the spheres, while safeguarding the interests of the State of Israel. The Division works with the Israeli embassies in Africa and with the missions of the African States in Israel, in order to coordinate all diplomatic and official activities.
Israel has established diplomatic relations with 39 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Israel has 11 diplomatic missions in this region, including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Zimbabwe, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Cameroon, Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Africa Division is composed of two regional sub-Divisions: Africa Division 1 is responsible for the States in the eastern and southern areas of the continent; Africa Division 2 is responsible for the countries in the central and western areas of Africa. These Divisions oversee Israel's network of ties with the aforementioned 39 African States. In addition, they maintain ongoing contacts with African diplomats serving in Israel.
The Africa Division also deals with issues relating to regional organizations in Africa such as the African Union (formerly the OAU) and provides assistance to various Israeli institutions that have contacts with African organizations, such as universities, friendship associations and relief organizations.
Ms. Miriam Ziv is the Deputy Director General of the Africa Division.
