Israel Expects the Lebanese Government to Deploy its Army in South Lebanon - Letter from Foreign Minister Levy to UN Secretary General
(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
July 26, 2000
Foreign Minister David Levy sent a letter today to the UN Secretary
General, Kofi Annan, welcoming his announcement to the Security
Council that Israel had rectified all violations of the withdrawal
line between Israel and Lebanon, as determined by UN officials.
Minister Levy emphasizes in his letter that Lebanon must now fulfill
its obligations in accordance with Resolution 425, and deploy its
forces immediately in areas vacated by Israel. Levy adds that Israel
expects Lebanon to act fairly towards former SLA men and their
families. The Security Council must demand that Lebanon put an end to
the daily provocations from its side, which threaten the calm along
the border. The Foreign Minister stresses that Israel has fully
implemented Security Council Resolution 425, in accordance with
agreements reached in his meetings with the Secretary General in New
York, Geneva and Jerusalem. The Foreign Minister thanks Annan for his
actions in this matter, as well as his special representative, Terje
Larsen, and his staff.
Levy welcomes the deployment of the UNIFIL forces in the area, which
is expected to take place tomorrow, and expresses his hope that the
quiet and stability which has been achieved along the border will be
maintained, serving as a basis for peace between Israel and Lebanon.
